According to the latest statistics from the American Heart Association,
the battle against heart disease is a battle we are winning! An estimated
80% of heart disease in women is preventable, and more women are beating
heart disease than ever before.
One of the reasons we are seeing a decrease in the number of people dying
from heart disease is the increased awareness in its causes, risk factors
and warning signs. For example, did you know that a heart attack can present
very differently in women than in men?
“While chest pain in men is triggered by physical activity and diminishes
with rest, women often experience chest pain while at rest or sleeping,”
says cardiologist Aimee Park, M.D. “Some women may experience the
same types of symptoms as men– chest tightness, shortness of breath
and left-sided jaw and arm pain—but many more present with an entirely
different set of symptoms, including:
- Chest or arm pain or discomfort
- Shortness of breath
- Indigestion, nausea
- Palpitations or abnormal heartbeats
- Unusual fatigue
- Breaking out in a cold sweat
Because heart disease does not choose a specific age, race or ethnicity,
it’s important for all women to G.O. R.E.D.

Raise Your Voice: Advocate for more women-related research and education.
Educate Your Family: Make healthy food choices for you and your family.
