Auxiliary Members – 1953

Members of the FMH Auxiliary have been bringing warmth, comfort, and hospitality to the patients, visitors, and staff of Frederick Memorial Hospital since September of 1952. Originally known as the Women’s Auxiliary of Frederick Memorial Hospital, the first volunteers could be found offering assistance in the FMH Records Room. By 1955 the FMH Auxiliary was the largest women’s organization in Frederick County. When men began to join the volunteer group in the 1970’s, the name was officially changed to Frederick Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.

Today the Auxiliary is composed of men and women who continue the tradition of service and stewardship. Members of the auxiliary provide hundreds of thousands of hours of their time to guide our visitors, transport our patients, and support the family members of those who are ill, injured, or on the mend. In 2015, 668 FMH Auxiliary volunteers contributed 85,098.75 hours of service!

Fundraising for the Future

FMH Auxiliary’s first fundraiser was the Snow Ball held on December 22, 1952. The event raised $1,131.50, which was used to air-condition the operating room. Since then, the Auxiliary has donated more than $6 million to the hospital for equipment and improvements, and has contributed millions of hours of service to the Frederick community.

The FMH Auxiliary takes part in many fundraising efforts throughout the year, including sales of books, baked goods, candy, and holiday gifts. The FMH Gift Shop and Select Seconds Thrift Store are two of the major fund raisers for the FMH Auxiliary.

Most recently, the FMH Auxiliary has made a five year, $1 million pledge in support of the James M. Stockman Cancer Institute. The Auxiliary is raising the funds to fulfill this generous pledge with the proceeds from many different projects and events. Two of their largest contributors are the FMH Gift Shop and the Select Seconds thrift store in Downtown Frederick. From purchasing to merchandising to staffing, both stores are run entirely by volunteers—lowering overhead and greatly increasing donations to FMH.

The FMH Gift Shop is located on the hospital main campus, along the hospital’s recently opened main corridor connecting the Outpatient (Green #1) entrance with the rest of the hospital. The newly renovated gift shop is open 365 days a year, including Thanksgiving and Christmas, offering sodas and snacks, balloons and flowers for all occasions, toys and plush animals, an assortment of baby items to celebrate new arrivals, and many seasonal and gift items.

The Select Seconds Thrift Store, a familiar site at 8 East Patrick Street in Downtown Frederick for many years, carries good quality, second-hand clothing for women, men, children, and infants. Select Seconds also has collectibles, antiques, jewelry, small furniture items, books, toys, games, and gift items for sale.

Research shows that volunteering improves your health in many ways — emotionally, and even physically. Volunteering also improves self-esteem, helps develop empathy for the problems of others, affirms personal values, and aids in personal development. Volunteering helps you feel connected to your community, and is a great opportunity to meet new people.

Each month, hundreds of caring individuals come to Frederick Memorial Hospital to volunteer. They assist patients who are arriving at, and departing from, the hospital, greet and direct visitors, staff the Gift Shop or the Select Seconds Thrift Store, deliver flowers and reading material, and so much more!
