The Art of Yoga - Pigeon Pose

To reap the amazing and vast benefits of yoga, you don’t have to twist yourself into a pretzel or stand on your head. The art of yoga is a practice, and it is truly what you make it.

Allow yoga to essentially meet you where you are in life. Whether looking to relax after a hectic week, stretch out your aching neck, shoulder, or hips, or to help with the therapy of an ailing joint, yoga is for you!

There are numerous benefits, both physically and mentally, that come from a consistent yoga practice, including:

  • Increase strength, balance, respiration, and flexibility
  • Decrease stress, anxiety, and depression
  • Aid in digestive issues, combats high blood pressure, and diabetes
  • Gain range of motion for post-stroke and cancer survivors

Pigeon pose is one of the most common traditional yoga poses and is a wonderful hip stretcher. It stretches your deep glute muscles, piriformis muscle, and can even alleviate sciatic pain. This pose can be very intimidating, even to seasoned yogis. Trying the lying pose or the chair pose helps to get the SAME stretch!

If you are able to successfully get up and down from the floor, you will start by lying on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Place your left ankle on top of your right knee. Take your left hand on the inside of that “figure-4” you made with your legs and your right hand around your right leg. Allow yourself to lean back so your back is flat on the floor.

If trying the chair position, sit on the edge of a non-moving chair (preferably against a wall), and take your left ankle over the right knee. Start by sitting tall, and if you want to get deeper into the pose to feel a more intense stretch, try leaning forward through your hips (back straight). Hold each side for 10-15 seconds each. Remember to breathe!
