Nursery

The Nursery is where your newborn will have an admission physical performed by our skilled nursing staff and your pediatrician will be notified of the newborn's birth. Dad or your birthing coach is welcome into the Nursery during the first examination and bathing of the newborn. When this process is completed, Dad or your birthing coach will re-join the mother in her room on our Family Center. Generally, the baby needs to remain under the warmer for approximately one hour after the first bath. Dad or your birthing coach may then come to the Nursery window to request your baby be brought to your room.

Newborn Screening Tests will be performed after the mother has given her informed consent and has signed the appropriate forms. The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene offers newborn screening as a service to identify certain disorders that can be treated if detected early. A simple, quick and economical blood chemistry test called a PKU can be done by heel stick and provides important information about your baby's health. A hearing screen is also provided for your newborn.  Vaccines can be started while here at the hospital and will be continued with the regular newborn immunizations at your pediatrician or family practice office.
