Frederick Memorial Hospital’s Stoke Unit on 4B is the place our patients who have suffered strokes receive care from a specially trained medical team comprised of numerous healthcare professionals.  Through tailored treatment protocols and specially trained staff, the Stroke Unit on 4B provides the community with a high standard of care for stroke patients.  Our nursing staff has been uniquely trained to care for stroke patients who require unique medical care.  The physical, occupational and speech therapists work closely with the stoke patients and their families to maximize the patient’s potential after a stroke.  Our social workers and case managers are qualified to assist patients and their families manage a variety discharge issues from returning home to locating additional services and rehabilitation facilities.  The doctors are focused on working with patients and their families toward the best outcome.

When a patient is admitted to Frederick Memorial Hospital’s Stoke Unit on 4B, their journey usually starts in the emergency room.  The staff of the emergency room is part of the Stroke Team and is trained to evaluate and treat acute ischemic strokes within one hour of admitting to the hospital.  The team utilizes Computerized Tomography within minutes of arrival to aid in the determination of what type of stroke the patient had.  This determination will dictate what course of care the stroke patient receives.  Modern therapy, which includes the administration of t-PA, requires intervention be done as soon as possible.  Frederick Memorial Hospital also has the ability to perform advanced brain imaging with the use of an MRI.  Throughout their stay, highly trained staff members that specialize in caring for stroke patients treat patients.
