Inpatient Diabetes Services
Studies have shown that uncontrolled diabetes interferes with the body's ability to heal during other major illness, infection, or surgery. In efforts to prevent complications, and to promote diabetes awareness, FMH has instituted a policy where all inpatients 18 years of age and above receive either a glucose fingerstick or a venous blood glucose upon admission to the hospital. FMH has a team of Diabetes Nurse Educators who follow inpatients with documented blood glucose elevations, providing diabetes support as needed. The educator communicates with the physician regarding the patient's diabetes needs, and patients requiring follow-up education are referred by the physician to the Outpatient Diabetes Center for Diabetes Self-Management Education or "DSME". |
