Baby Hat Instructions

Knit Caps

Newborn nursery hats need to be made from yarn that is soft & stretchy enough to fit. Please do not glue on pom poms/tassels!

  • For small head it should stretch to 10-12" around
  • For a medium-size head it should stretch to 12-14" around

NEEDLE SIZE #6 for cap, #4 for pom pom

3ply baby yarn - 100% acrylic

Cast on 60 stitches.

Next row knit 2, purl 2, to the end of the row. Continue in this pattern for six inches.

Next row knit 2 together, purl 2 together across the row.

Next row purl. Next row knit 2 together across row. Next row purl.

Next row knit 2 together across row.

Thread needle and take remaining stitches off knitting needle.

Draw tight. Sew cap.

Pom-Pom

Take a 2 inch wide piece of cardboard, wind yarn around it at least 30 times.

Slide yarn off cardboard carefully; tie in the middle and cut edges (to make separate strands).

Trim loose ends.

Use yarn to sew pom-pom on the cap.

 

You may drop off the baby hats in the Volunteer Office located just inside the Inpatient Discharge Pickup entrance/exit on the side of the hospital closest to the Park on Trail Avenue. We are open Monday - Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

If you are an FMH Volunteer please make sure you sign in and out what your total work hours were (4-5 hrs. per hat).

If you are not an FMH Volunteer please make sure you include a note providing your name and address so we may send an Acknowledgement/Thank you letter or card. Also indicate the number of hats you provided.

 

Crocheted Caps

Materials Needed:

Size F Needle
"Red Heart Sofspun" baby yarn (1/2 ounce).

All rows are worked Back Loop Only (blo) of each st to create ribbing for stretchability.

Chain 35.

Sc in second ch from hook, sc in each st across. Ch l, turn - 34 scs.

Row 2: Sc in blo of each st across. Ch 1, turn - 34 scs.

Continue in this pattern for 56 rows.

Using tapestry needle, weave at end st of every other row along the 56 row portion, pull thread tightly and whip-stitch to firmly secure top crown.

Hold weave side of Row 1 and right side of Row 56 tog, sl st with crochet hook, or weave through the blo of Row 56, matching 34 corresponding sts.

Fasten off, weave in ends.

Make small pom pom for crown. Please do not glue it on, this is uncomfortable for the baby's head.

Pom Pom

Turn loose ends.

Use yarn to sew pom pom on cap.
