Multidisciplinary Lung Cancer Clinic
Saving Time. Saving Lives.
The Regional Cancer Therapy Center is now offering a program for patients with suspected or newly diagnosed lung cancer called the Multidisciplinary Lung Cancer Clinic (MLCC). This program offers collaborative treatment planning during one visit, and provides rapid implementation of the patient’s treatment protocol.
Dr. Paul Chomiak, Thoracic Surgeon and Chairman of Frederick Memorial Hospital’s Cancer Committee says, “one of the challenges that physicians and patients alike have had to face in the treatment of lung cancers has been the delay between diagnosis and treatment. This is a national problem, and it is a challenge that the FMH Regional Cancer Therapy Center is stepping up to solve. We are one of only a handful of Lung Cancer Clinics presently operating in the United States.” Dr. Chomiak adds, “Another unique aspect of the Multidisciplinary Lung Cancer Clinic is that we will use a Patient Navigator to assist the patient throughout their treatment. The Navigator will coordinate the patient’s care and guide the patient through the program.”
Primary care physicians or specialist physicians caring for patients with suspected or proven lung cancer may refer their patients to the MLCC. During their first visit, the patients have the option of consulting with a thoracic surgeon, a medical oncologist, a radiation oncologist and a pulmonologist. After consultation with the patient, the physicians hold a consensus conference in which a treatment plan will be developed. The Nurse Navigator will communicate the treatment plan to the patient, coordinate all of the necessary appointments, and provide education to the patient about the course of treatment.
Dr. Chomiak concludes, “It is the goal of the Multidisciplinary Lung Cancer Clinic to reduce the amount of time between diagnosis and treatment from two to three months to no longer than two weeks. We think that this will dramatically enhance the quality of life for the lung cancer patients we treat at the FMH Regional Cancer Therapy Center.” To get more information about the Multidisciplinary Lung Cancer Clinic, call Maggie Siebeneichen, Patient Navigator at: 301-694-5864 (LUNG).
