New Direction Program®

The New Direction® Program is a medically monitored program designed for those who have 40 or more pounds to lose. This comprehensive program begins with a medical pre- screening to assess appropriateness for the program, which includes: a physical, behavioral health assessment, anthropometric measurements, body mass index computation, comprehensive lab work and an electrocardiogram.

During the first part of the program you will be on a very low calorie diet (VLCD), which consists of a nutritionally complete beverage as your sole source of nutrition. Medical monitoring is conducted to insure your safety while in the program. In the second phase of the program, the adapting phase, a dietitian and behaviorist will meet with you to help you transition back to whole foods both nutritionally and behaviorally. The third and most important phase is the maintenance phase. This is when you are eating healthy foods at a calorie level that will enable you to manage your weight successfully for a lifetime.

A key component to all three phases of the program is the weekly support/education classes. These classes cover important components to weight loss such as behaviors, nutrition and exercise. Our philosophy is based on learning and practicing healthy behaviors and getting rid of the "diet" mentality. For long-term success we will give you the tools needed to make those healthy life-style changes.

The behavioral classes will focus on changing the behaviors we know are unhealthy and teach you to replace them with better ones. Most of us know what our bad habits are we just need help in practicing good habits! The instructor plus group support and suggestions will help motivate change.

Our dietitian will provide plenty of healthy eating information in preparation for your transition back into eating regular food. She will also teach classes on topics ranging from portion control to dining out in restaurants.

Our exercise specialist will enlighten you on the importance of exercise. These classes cover how, when and why to incorporate exercise into your weight loss plan.

When you have achieved your weight loss you can then enter the Maintenance Program.

Patient Testimonial:

"I have always had a weight issue, tried every diet out there and always gained it back, plus more!

Last July  2011, I walked into the FMH Wellness Center, had my first meeting, and felt this is the program for me.

Each step of the way on my weight loss journey someone was always there for me if I had any issues or concerns.

The support from the weekly meetings was very helpful and informative. Week after week I would see the pounds melt off and I would see my old self coming back .I felt healthier and more self confident about myself. I knew that I had achieved my goal when my son came to hug me and he said, mom  I can put my arms around you!"

Patient Testimonial:

"Since joining the New Direction program back in May 2011, I have been extremely pleased with the results. What attracted me initially was the sense that I could achieve my weight loss goals with a Program that could fit into my hectic work schedule. I found that it was much more than that. First off, the FMH Wellness staff are extremely caring and provide the monitoring and support you need to be successful. Expert care is provided through nurse practitioners, behaviorists, dieticians, and exercise specialists. The staff leads group sessions that provide important lessons which give you the tools to overcome a lifetime of bad eating habits. Sharing experiences with others in the group helps you realize you're not alone in your struggles. I feel very confident that the lessons I have learned will allow me to keep the weight off and maintain a healthy lifestyle going forward." -Tom F.

Individual Nutrition Counseling

The FMH Wellness Center also offers an individualized approach toward improving your diet to manage or prevent specific health conditions. Many of our patients choose nutrition counseling for weight management.  We also assist people in reducing their cholesterol/blood pressure through diet changes. Still others find benefits from nutrition counseling in treating eating disorders, food allergies, improving their overall nutrition status, or a whole host of other nutritional concerns.

You can begin your path to better health with an individual consultation provided by one of our registered dietitians. They will get you started with recommendations and/or a food plan designed to meet your likes and dislikes and accommodate your busy schedule.

Those seeking weight loss may choose to incorporate one or two of our nutritionally complete beverages which act as a meal replacement into your food plan or go with an all food plan; it's really up to your individual needs.

In each session, the dietitian will confidentially address your needs and discuss the tools used to make important life-style changes. Staying healthy is a long hard road, a process that takes commitment and discipline. We feel strongly that regular follow-up appointments will help provide the needed support and education necessary for success and that is what sets this hospital program apart from all the others.

"The Healthy Weigh"

A Weight Management Program for Toddlers - Teens and their Families

The Healthy Weigh For Kids is a Nutritional & Weight Management Program designed by the combined efforts of the FMH Wellness staff and The Pediatric Center of Frederick, LLC to promote, teach, and understand proper nutrition and healthy lifestyles. The program offers nutritional, behavioral, and activity/ fitness components to meet the varied needs of all patients. Separate specialists in each of these areas will work with patients either individually or in a group format.

Family involvement is emphasized and is essential for success. The philosophy of the program is a combination of positive reinforcement and goal attainment structured to make patients and their families comfortable.

To get started, we'll schedule a one-hour initial consultation with our behaviorist, at which time patient and family background information will be assessed. Initial teaching and recommendations will commence, including planning follow-up visits with other specialists and establishing both short and long term goals. Length of involvement with the program will vary. Some patients and families may only require basic information and structure to get started. For children with more serious weight or nutritional issues (or designated "high risk" by their doctor or the dietitian), a structured format of ongoing visits, lasting a minimum of three months, is necessary to ensure long term success. The onsite team consists of licensed dietitians, an exercise specialist, and a behaviorist employed by the FMH Wellness Center. The Pediatric Center of Frederick, LLC may offer medical oversight and input.

It's our goal to have a variety of appointment times available for all your scheduling needs, including weekdays, evenings and Saturdays. To schedule your private consultation at the FMH Wellness Center (at the FSK Mall in Frederick), please give us a call at 240-379-6020. In the meantime, you might find our Weight Management Brochure of interest.

Bariatric Surgery Preparation Program

The FMH Bariatric Surgery Preparation Program prepares patients nutritionally and behaviorally for gastric bypass surgery or the lap band procedure based on the surgeon's recommendations.  After your surgeon performs the procedure our dietitians, behaviorists, and exercise specialists will assist with your care.  We recommend that you commit to 6 months of nutrition counseling and monitoring to assist with safe and rapid weight loss.

You can begin your path to safe and rapid weight loss with a nutritional screening and assessment provided by one of our registered dietitians. They will get you started with guidelines to initiate the pre-operative weight loss suggested by your surgeon, which may make you a healthier candidate for the operation. During the consultation(s) you and the dietitian may decide to incorporate our high protein nutritional supplement into your diet and make other modifications. Then they will discuss what you can expect in terms of diet tolerance after surgery and how the diet will progress over the following weeks. Careful attention will be taken to meet your nutritional and fluid needs.

Consultations with a behaviorist and exercise physiologist are also part of your pre and post-surgery program. The behaviorist will meet with you to discuss the lifestyle changes required after surgery. Areas that will be addressed include goal setting, stress and coping strategies, behaviors related to eating, motivation, and expectations. The exercise physiologist will meet with you to discuss the importance of physical activity  and how to incorporate it into your everyday life for improved health and well-being after your surgery.

Becoming healthy is a long hard road, a process that takes commitment and discipline. We feel strongly that regular follow-up appointments will help provide the needed support and education necessary for healthy weight loss and weight maintenance in the future.
