FMH Auxiliary Celebrates 26th Tree of Lights Ceremony

On December 6th the FMH Auxiliary illuminated large evergreen trees on the hospital grounds with beautifully festive lights for the 26th year in a row; in recognition and celebration of the Tree of Lights ceremony.

Beginning in 1990, the Tree of Lights Campaign has served as a remembrance project that enables families, friends and community members to express their appreciation or pay tribute to someone special. With a donation, individuals can purchase one of three types of lights that decorate the three evergreen trees at the hospital park. White lights that twinkle for the year can be purchased for a donation of $5; while gold lights representing “life lights” and are lighted annually, can be purchased for a one-time donation of $100. Finally, red lights are lighted annually and can be purchased for a one-time donation of $500.

All of the funds raised during the FMH Auxiliary’s 2016 Tree of Lights Campaign will be donated to the Monocacy Health Partners Dental Clinic. During this year’s ceremony Dr. Gerald Winnan, Vice Chairman of Frederick Regional Health System Board of Directors, and Tom Kleinhanzl, President & CEO of Frederick Memorial Hospital, both spoke of the immediate need for access to dental care in the Frederick community for adults who are uninsured or underinsured, as well as the important role the Dental Clinic plays in the overall health of the Frederick population. Melinda Hite, Practice Manager of the Monocacy Health Partners Dental Clinic, was excited to announce that the dental clinic has served over 400 patients this year, some of whom haven’t had the opportunity to see a dentist in decades.

All in attendance were welcomed by Joe Collins, FMH Auxiliary President, and Sharon Hannaby, FMH Director of Volunteer Services. John and Darlene Aulls, Chairs of the Tree of Lights Committee, presented Melinda Hite and Frederick County Oral Surgeon Dr. Vincent DiFabio with a check to fund the purchase of new equipment for the dental clinic.

The FMH Auxiliary is one of the largest hospital auxiliaries in Maryland with approximately 700 volunteers contributing annually more than 83,000 hours of service through a wide variety of services for the Frederick Regional Health System. The FMH Auxiliary also operates the hospital gift shop and the Select Seconds Thrift Store on East Patrick Street in downtown Frederick. To learn more about the FMH Auxiliary, visit
