Good Samaritan of the Year-Call for Nominations

Every year, Frederick Memorial Hospital honors a local individual as its Good Samaritan of the Year. Now in its 28th year, this prestigious award recognizes deserving individuals not only for their generosity to FMH, but also for their selfless commitment to improving the quality of life in the entire Frederick community.

The Good Samaritan of the Year Award selection committee has issued a Call for Nominations. The committee will evaluate applications submitted from the community based on the degree to which nominees have demonstrated:

  • Actions or achievements that substantially advance FMH toward the fulfillment of its goals;
  • Long term involvement in community service activities;
  • Actions or achievements that substantially advance patient care, the economic health of FMH or the physical safety of its personnel or patients;
  • Performance of a distinguished act in the interest of humanity that epitomizes excellence and leadership.

FMH Special Gifts Committee Chair Dan Schiffman has served as chairman of the selection committee for the past nine years. According to Schiffman, recipients of the Good Samaritan of the Year Award represent the highest aspects of human nature—generosity, excellence, selfless leadership and commitment.

“Over the years, the FMH Good Samaritan of the Year award has been presented to 47 individuals,” said Schiffman. “Honorees have included nurses, bankers, writers, poets, firefighters, physicians, entrepreneurs, policemen, politicians, educators, volunteers, business people, artists and many others. They are a large and varied group, but they are all united in their profound commitment to FMH and its tradition of quality in healthcare services, and their dedication to making the Frederick community a better place.”

In 1991, three individuals shared the first Good Samaritan of the Year Award: Lifelong Frederick resident Alden Fisher, Frederick businessman and community volunteer Charlie Snyder and retired FMH nurse Nancy Szymanski. Most recently, longtime Fredericktonians and avid volunteers Dick and Sue Basford were named the FMH 2017 Good Samaritans of the Year.
