It's That Time Again-Flu Shots Now Available

Fall is flu season. Have you had your flu shot yet?

While flu vaccine effectiveness may vary year to year, flu vaccines provide important protections against the flu. In fact, they prevent millions of illnesses and flu-related doctors’ visits each year. From 2016-2017, for example, the CDC reports that flu vaccination prevented an estimated 5.3 million influenza illnesses, 2.6 million influenza-associated medical visits, and 85,000 influenza-associated hospitalizations.

Flu vaccines work by causing antibodies to develop in the body about two weeks after vaccinations. These antibodies protect against infection with the viruses found in the vaccine. The seasonal flu vaccine protects against the influenza viruses that researchers indicate as the most common during the upcoming season.

A flu shot is the single best way to protect you and your loved ones against the flu.

Everyone 6 months of age and older should get a flu vaccine every flu season, with rare exceptions. Flu prevention is especially crucial for people with a high risk of developing serious flu complications and other health factors that increase your risk. The CDC recommends getting a flu vaccine by the end of October each year.

Flu Vaccine Q&A

When will Urgent Care offer flu shots? Are there any age restrictions for children under 9 years old?

Urgent Care is now offering flu shots (we started on Sept. 11). Any child under 12 years old who has not had a flu shot in the past must be seen by their primary care provider.

When will Primary Care offer flu shots? Is there an option for walk-in vs. scheduled appointments?

Primary Care began offering flu shots on Sept. 9 at scheduled appointments with primary care providers and on dates available above during flu clinic. We prefer patients to schedule an appointment, but we will accommodate walk-ins to suit the needs of our patients.

Are you offering flu mists this year?

No. We do not offer the flu mist.

Are you offering flu shots at any other locations?

Yes. In addition to the Urgent Care and Primary Care locations listed above, we offer flu shots at Internal Medicine Associates and Way Station. We offer flu vaccines for Hood College and Mount St. Mary’s University students but please schedule through the colleges. Way Station is first-come, first-served.
