Stroke Program Mission
The Stroke Program at Frederick Memorial Hospital applies the organizational
values of quality, responsibility, stewardship, respect, dignity, empowerment,
honesty, integrity, collaboration and teamwork to:
- Deliver competent, appropriate and timely treatment to all patients with
suspected stroke, across the entire continuum of care.
- Educate patients, families, and the community about stroke prevention strategies,
stroke response strategies, and challenges created by stroke.
- Provide supportive services to stroke survivors, caregivers, families &
friends on all levels of the human experience.
- Promote continued improvement in stroke outcomes in the community we serve.
About the Stroke Program
Frederick Memorial Hospital is designated by the Maryland Institute of
Emergency Medical Service Systems (MIEMSS) as a Primary Stroke Center.
FMH was awarded the 2017 Target Stroke Honor Roll and the Get With The
Guidelines (GWTG) Gold Plus Achievement Award by the American Heart Association
for continued success in patient care.

Frederick Memorial Hospital’s Stroke Unit on 3A is where stroke patients
receive care from a specially-trained medical team comprised of numerous
healthcare professionals. Through tailored treatment protocols and specially
trained staff, the Stroke Unit on 3A provides the community with a high
standard of care for stroke patients. Our nursing staff has been uniquely
trained to care for stroke patients who require unique medical care. The
physical, occupational and speech therapists work closely with the stroke
patients and their families to maximize the patient’s potential
after a stroke. Our social workers and case managers are qualified to
assist patients and their families manage a variety discharge issues from
returning home to locating additional services and rehabilitation facilities.
The doctors are focused on working with patients and their families toward
the best outcome.
When a patient is admitted to Frederick Memorial Hospital’s Stroke
Unit on 3A, their journey usually starts in the emergency room. The staff
of the emergency room is part of the Stroke Team and is trained to evaluate
and treat acute ischemic strokes within one hour of admitting to the hospital.
The team utilizes Computerized Tomography within minutes of arrival to
aid in the determination of what type of stroke the patient had. This
determination will dictate what course of care the stroke patient receives.
Modern therapy, which includes the administration of t-PA, requires intervention
be done as soon as possible. Frederick Memorial Hospital also has the
ability to perform advanced brain imaging with the use of an MRI.
